Statement of Purpose

This project is an investigation of 5 Martial Arts styles. Self-defense is a major theme in martial arts today and to better understand how different martial arts schools and styles treat self-defense I am going to learn all I can (given time restraints) about each of the five styles. These schools will be chosen from a list of local martial arts studios, and the style will be the one that is taught at that studio. Many studios teach multiple styles, so in this case on of the styles taught there will be analyzed. At the end of the project all the schools I visited will be rated and scored to show in which areas they excel or by contrast, fall short.

Sample Self Defense Technique- Destroying the Lance

Destroying the Lance
Front knife stab to the stomach with right hand
Theme: The theme of Destroying the Lance is avoiding the attackers attack as well as blocking it. The block by itself may not be enough to avoid injury, the act of steeping out of the way and removing yourself from the attacker’s area of attack you have increased your odds at avoiding the stab. This technique is also working on controlling the attacker’s arm that wields the knife, because that arm is the most dangerous to the defender.

Principles pertaining to Destroying the Lance
  • Borrowed force
  • Checking the Height zone
  • Angle of incidence
  • Controlling the attacker
  • Rotation
Destroying the Lance

  1. As the attacker steps through with their right foot towards you and thrusts out with their knife towards your navel your left leg steps to 11 o’clock as you simultaneously execute an outward knife hand strike to the throat with your left hand and an outward downward parry block to the opponents wrist (of the hand holding the knife) with your right hand.
  2. Take both hands and grip the attackers hand so that your thumbs rest on the back of his hand, then step your right foot to 10 o’clock into a twist stance. Procede to turn counterclockwise as you twist the attackers wrist to snap the wrist (crippling the hand by causing breaks or trauma to the carpal bones) and force them onto their back on the ground
  3. Keep hold of their wrist with your hands as you proceed to stomp kick their face with your right leg, aiming for the nose and doing maximum damage by forcing the bridge of the nose back up into their skull with your heel.
  4. Your right leg stays up as it inward arch kicks opponents wrist and then lands onto the wrist as your hands let go (perhaps breaking the aforementioned carpal bones, or severing a tendon), landing into a twist stance on top of attackers wrist holding the knife.
  5. You twist out of your stance into a cat stance snapping the opponents arm.
  6. You continue this turning motion as you looping downward Stomp kick using the ball of the foot to connect with the nose or larynx.
  7. As you execute that kick you lean down and retrieve the knife if they have not already let go of it.
  8. Cover out (retreat to a safe distance and take evaluation of the situation)
